Welcome back to the midweek edition!
In this issue, we start by tackling the question: which area should Kevin explore with the kids this summer? Then, we dive into local stories—from wildfires to birds—that are sure to spark your interest. We spotlight a great spot to grab a cup of coffee (and maybe talk a little business), and introduce a new pup in the running for the cutest in DougCo: Ms. Bettie Whyte. Finally, we wrap up with a roundup of events and happenings around the county from Wednesday through the weekend.

Community Spotlight

Douglas County Uses AI to Fight Wildfires Faster

Douglas County uses Pano AI cameras to detect wildfires early and alert responders with exact locations and live images. With a new dedicated firefighting helicopter and helitack team, the county can respond quickly without outside help, cutting response times nearly in half.

This system helped contain the Bear Creek Fire in June 2024 to just three acres by enabling fast action on difficult terrain.

Bird Numbers Are Declining, But There’s Hope

Researcher Meredith McBurney bands birds at Denver Audubon’s Kingery Nature Center. Though bird populations have dropped significantly, her work helps track their health and migration.

She encourages community action—like managing cats and planting native plants—to support birds. Denver Audubon sees urban backyards and parks as key habitats. Despite challenges, McBurney believes individual efforts can make a difference. Read more here.

Deja Brew: Parker’s Coffee and Community Hub

Got a chance to work in Deja Brew yesterday. Really cool little coffee shop off of Parker Road, Deja Brew is more than your go-to for great coffee—it’s a neighborhood staple blending caffeine, creativity, and community.

Known for its cozy vibe and handcrafted drinks, Deja Brew serves up signature lattes made with house-made sauces (think horchata, cinnamon brown sugar, and peanut butter mocha). Their coffee flights are fan favorites—perfect for sampling or snapping a pic.

But this isn’t just a coffee shop. Deja Brew doubles as a full-service print shop and hosts regular live music nights, pop-up events, and private gatherings. It's where locals come to work, unwind, and connect.
